Most of today's internet connections are DSL / Broadband lines which have between a 1mb – 2mb downstream bandwidth speed. If you were to run a speed test on your line you might find you only have around 70% of that figure.
Your (ISP) Internet service provider connects you via a local telephone exchange which then gets split in to up to 50 lines, which one of which is yours. This is known as a 50:1 contention ratio. If all these lines were to be used at one time your bandwidth would be very much reduced, resulting in a slower speed connection.
WebCast-TV has done many tests to find the best settings to upload our webcasts. We have picked an average upload speed of 282kbps. With the current upload speeds provided by ISP’s, this is the optimum for a live webcast.
At this time, with the constraints in technology there is little reason to upload at a higher speed than 282kbps, as many of you would not be able to download at a faster speed without loosing quality of broadcast.
To ensure an uninterrupted stream and the best viewing experience delivered to you computer it is wise to close all other applications and web browser windows that are accessing your internet. Using more than one computer per standard DSL line might also slow your speed. Also a wireless connection can tend to loose signal for a split second and interrupt your stream.
With this understanding we hope you all have happy viewing and look forward to the advances of technology and internet speeds where we can all enjoy trouble free viewing, better quality and bigger picture.
